Luxury Fly-In Safaris in Kenya: Costs, Destinations and Itineraries

Luxury Fly-In Safaris in Kenya: Costs, Destinations and Itineraries

A luxury fly-in safari in Kenya replaces long road transfers with short flights on small aircraft from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to airstrips beside your camp. Scheduled flights reach the Masai Mara in about 40 minutes and Amboseli in about 35 minutes, compared with five to six hours by road. One-way fares to the Mara start from around USD 170 to 250 per person, and a 7-day luxury fly-in safari typically costs about USD 8,000 to 15,000 per person, including lodges.

Flying gives you more time with wildlife and less time on the road. It also lets you combine regions such as the Mara, Laikipia and the coast in one trip, which would be tiring by car.

Luxury Fly-In Safaris in Kenya

How a Luxury Fly-In Safari in Kenya Works

On a fly-in safari, you fly between parks instead of driving. Your camp’s guide meets you at the airstrip with a game-drive vehicle, so your safari often begins the moment you land.

Where the flights leave from

Most safari flights leave from Wilson Airport, Nairobi’s domestic airport, about 30 to 45 minutes by road from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). If you arrive on an overnight international flight, you can usually connect to a morning safari flight the same day, or spend a night in Nairobi first.

Scheduled flights or private charters

  • Scheduled flights run daily on set routes and are the most affordable option. Airkenya, for example, flies from Wilson to the Masai Mara three times a day and to Laikipia and Samburu once a day.
  • Private charters fly only you, on your own schedule. They cost more but suit families, honeymooners and tight connections.
  • Helicopters are the most exclusive option, reaching remote spots such as northern Kenya’s lakes and mountains.

The aircraft

Most scheduled safari flights use small planes such as the Cessna Grand Caravan, with around 11 seats. Some busier routes use larger aircraft, such as the 18-seat Twin Otter. Flights are low and slow, so you often see wildlife from the air.

Luggage rules

Luggage limits are strict because the planes are small. On Airkenya, for example, the allowance is 15 kg per person in soft bags, including hand luggage.

  • Use a soft duffel bag without wheels or a rigid frame.
  • Store larger suitcases at Wilson Airport; Airkenya offers free storage.
  • Need more? Excess baggage can usually be bought, or you can book an extra seat for luggage.

Check-in times

Check in about 60 minutes before departure at Wilson and about 30 minutes before at bush airstrips. Flights may stop at several airstrips, so arrival times can shift by up to 45 minutes.

Best Destinations for a Luxury Fly-In Safari in Kenya

The Masai Mara is the most popular fly-in destination, but flights also make it easy to add Amboseli, Laikipia, Samburu and the coast.

Destination Flight from Wilson Main airstrips Why fly in
Masai Mara About 40 minutes Mara North, Olare Orok, Ol Kiombo, Keekorok, Kichwa Tembo Saves a 5 to 6 hour drive; lands you beside the conservancy camps
Amboseli About 35 minutes Amboseli Elephants and Kilimanjaro views within an hour of Nairobi
Laikipia About 1 hour (scheduled, with stops) Lewa Downs, Loisaba, Nanyuki Rhino, walking and riding on private ranches
Samburu About 1 hour (scheduled, with stops) Samburu Buffalo Springs, Kalama Northern species and remote wilderness
Meru About 1 hour Meru Quiet park with few other visitors
Kenyan coast Around 1 to 1.5 hours (approximate) Ukunda (Diani), Lamu, Malindi Ends a safari with a beach stay

Masai Mara

Most luxury camps in the Mara conservancies are 10 to 30 minutes from their nearest airstrip. Your guide meets you on landing and usually turns the transfer into your first game drive. For more on where to stay, see our guide to the top 10 Masai Mara conservancies.

Laikipia and Samburu

These northern regions are where flying really pays off. By road, Samburu is around six hours from Nairobi, while a flight takes about an hour. Scheduled flights often stop at several airstrips, such as Lewa Downs, Loisaba and Samburu, on one route.

Amboseli

Amboseli is the shortest safari flight from Nairobi, at around 35 minutes. Combine it with the Mara by flying back via Wilson, or by charter direct between the two.

The coast

Finish your safari on the Indian Ocean. Flights link Nairobi and some safari airstrips with Ukunda for Diani Beach, and with Lamu for a quieter, cultural stay.

Fly-In vs Drive-In Safari: Which Is Right for You?

Factor Fly-in safari Drive-in (road) safari
Nairobi to Masai Mara About 40 minutes About 5 to 6 hours
Time on safari More game drives, less travel Travel days use up game time
Cost Higher: flights add several hundred USD per leg Lower: one vehicle for the whole trip
Luggage 15 kg soft bags Little limit
Guide A different camp guide in each region The same driver-guide throughout
Scenery on the way Aerial views of the Rift Valley and plains Road views, towns and roadside stops
Best for Short trips, multi-region safaris, couples Budget-conscious trips and travellers who enjoy road journeys

Many guests choose a fly-in and drive-in mix: for example, driving from Nairobi to Amboseli, then flying to the Mara and the coast.

Tips for a Smooth Fly-In Safari

  1. Pack light and soft. Stick to 15 kg in a soft duffel, and leave the rest at Wilson.
  2. Plan your connection. Allow enough time between your international arrival at JKIA and your Wilson departure, or spend the first night in Nairobi.
  3. Expect stops. Scheduled flights may stop at several airstrips, so build in flexibility.
  4. Wear layers. Early flights and game drives can be cool.
  5. Keep essentials with you. Carry medication, a camera and a light jacket in a small bag within your allowance.
  6. Consider a charter. For families or tight schedules, a private plane can save hours.
