Best Luxury Safari Experiences in Amboseli

1. Elephants beneath Kilimanjaro

Amboseli is one of the best places in Africa to watch elephants up close. Around 1,500 elephants use the wider ecosystem, and the park’s open plains let you watch family herds walk, bathe and feed with Africa’s highest mountain behind them. Amboseli is also home to some of the continent’s last “big tuskers”, bulls with tusks long enough to brush the ground.

Elephants here have been studied for decades by the Amboseli Trust for Elephants. The park was home to Echo, the most researched elephant in the world, who died in 2009.

2. Kilimanjaro sunrise game drive

At 5,895 m, Mount Kilimanjaro rises across the border in Tanzania. It is often clearest at dawn before clouds build, so an early drive gives the best chance of the classic view. Your guide will position you for elephants, giraffes or zebras in the foreground.

3. Hot-air balloon flight at dawn

Camps such as Tortilis can arrange a dawn balloon flight, followed by a champagne breakfast. Drifting over the plains with Kilimanjaro on the horizon is one of the most memorable ways to see the park. Ask us to book it when you reserve your safari, as places are limited.

4. Sundowners on Observation Hill

Observation Hill looks over Amboseli’s swamps and plains, where elephants, hippos and buffalo gather to feed. A drink here at sunset, with Kilimanjaro turning pink, is a highlight of any luxury Amboseli safari.

5. Walks and night drives in a private conservancy

Inside the park, only some lodges, such as Amboseli Serena, offer night drives. Conservancy camps on the park’s edge offer walks and night drives as standard. You can walk with Maasai guides to read tracks, or head out after dark to look for hyenas, bushbabies and other nocturnal animals.

6. Birding in the swamps

Amboseli has about 400 bird species, including 47 birds of prey. Its permanent swamps attract pelicans, herons, kingfishers and crowned cranes, making it rewarding even for non-birders.

7. Maasai cultural visits

The land around Amboseli is home to Maasai communities, many of whom lease their land to conservancies. A visit to a homestead, arranged with the community, shows how people and wildlife share this landscape.

8. Bush meals and camel walks

Many camps offer bush breakfasts after an early drive and bush dinners under the stars. Some, such as Tawi Lodge, also offer camel walks across the plains.

Where to Stay: Luxury Camps and Lodges in Amboseli

You can stay inside Amboseli National Park, close to the swamps and elephant herds, or in a private conservancy on its edge for walks, night drives and fewer vehicles.

Camp Location Best for
Tortilis Camp Private conservancy on the edge of the park Kilimanjaro views, walks, night drives and balloon flights
Tawi Lodge 3,000-acre private conservancy near Kimana Gate Kilimanjaro from your bed, camel walks, couples
Porini Amboseli Camp 12,500-acre Selenkay Conservancy, north of the park Exclusive game viewing and low-impact safaris
Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge Inside the national park Easy park access, families, a pool

Tortilis Camp

Run by the Elewana Collection, Tortilis Camp sits in a private conservancy right on the edge of the park, facing Kilimanjaro. Alongside game drives, guests can take night drives, guided walks (ages 16 and over), sundowners at Sunset Hill and a dawn balloon flight. A separate two-bedroom Private House on a hill suits families and small groups.

  • Best for: Kilimanjaro views and the widest choice of activities

Tawi Lodge

Tawi Lodge has 13 en-suite cottages on a 3,000-acre private conservancy, about five minutes from Kimana Gate. Every cottage faces Mount Kilimanjaro, so you can see it from your bed or bath. The lodge overlooks a waterhole visited by elephants day and night.

  • Best for: Couples, honeymooners and families (two cottages can be joined)
  • Activities: Day and night game drives, nature and bird walks, camel walks and bush meals

Porini Amboseli Camp

Porini Amboseli Camp is the only camp in the 12,500-acre Selenkay Conservancy, leased from the local Maasai community north of the park. With no other tourist vehicles allowed in the conservancy, sightings feel private. The camp has nine tents and one family tent, runs on solar power and is Gold eco-rated.

  • Best for: Exclusive game viewing and eco-minded travellers
  • Activities: Night drives, guided walks, bush meals, sundowners, cultural visits and drives into the park

Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge

Amboseli Serena sits in the heart of the national park beside a natural spring, with views of Kilimanjaro. Its 92 rooms and one suite are built in the style of a Maasai manyatta, with hand-painted wildlife murals, a palm-shaded pool and the Maisha Spa.

  • Best for: Families and travellers who want to be inside the park
  • Extras: Night drives, bush breakfasts, bush dinners and sundowners on Observation Hill, at an extra charge

How Much Does a Luxury Amboseli Safari Cost?

A luxury Amboseli safari costs about USD 400 to 900 per person per night at camps such as Tortilis, Tawi, Porini Amboseli and Amboseli Serena, depending on the season. Rates are usually full board, and conservancy camps often include game drives and conservancy fees. Park fees, flights and extras such as balloon flights are usually charged separately.

Park fees

Amboseli National Park is managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), which charges a daily entry fee per person. KWS introduced a new fee schedule in October 2025, which was then challenged in court, so we confirm the current non-resident rate when we quote your safari. If you stay in a conservancy, you only pay the park fee on the days you drive into the park.

Best Time to Visit Amboseli

The best time for a luxury Amboseli safari is during the dry seasons, from June to October and January to February. Elephants gather around the permanent swamps, the grass is short and the air is often clearer for Kilimanjaro views. However, Amboseli’s elephants stay all year, so wildlife viewing is good in every season.

Months What to expect Good for
January to February Dry and warm between the rains Elephants at the swamps, good mountain views
March to May Long rains, especially April and May Green landscapes, fewer visitors, lower rates
June to October Long dry season; can be dusty later on Peak elephant viewing and clear mornings
November to December Short rains Birdlife, newborn animals and quieter camps

Tip for Kilimanjaro views: the mountain is usually clearest in the early morning and sometimes again around sunset. Clouds often cover the peak by mid-morning, so plan your first drive early.

How to Get to Amboseli

  • By air: Scheduled light aircraft fly from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to Amboseli in about 35 minutes. Your camp’s guide meets you at the airstrip. The luggage limit is usually 15 kg per person in soft bags.
  • By road: The drive from Nairobi takes around 4 hours in a private 4×4. It suits travellers combining Amboseli with Tsavo or heading on to the coast.
